A fresco is a painting done on wet plaster. Fist the plaster is made with a mixture of sand, lyme, and water and troweled on a board. This pushes the sand to the bottom and leaves the wetter mixture of lyme and plaster on the top. Then paint is made with ground pigments and water and painted on top of the surface. The painting must be done quickly before the plaster dries.
